So, So Sad

A couple weeks ago, we met John Penny, a local jazz musician. He used to live in our house. He sold it in 2002 to the couple who lived here two people before us.

We gave him a tour of the house, even though it looks like squatters live here. He answered a lot of questions we had. He also gave us some of the most disappointing news we've heard about the house: when he lived here, the wood trim was still natural.

When we moved in, we mentioned many times how nice natural trim would be. We figured it was painted white 50 years ago or so. HA! Someone thought it was a good idea since 2002.

Don't believe me? He sent me some proof.

Makes me want to cry.

I assume that some of the wood might have been in bad shape, but you do NOT paint natural original wood in a house that is more than 100 years old.

Poor trimwork. Ours was painted when we bought it also. I think a lot of people are into painting woodwork, because that's what they see in so many decorating magazines these days.

You could always go the shellac route, instead of stripping it :) That's what we ended up doing.

Good luck with whichever you decide!
